Cloud-native without compromise

How DATEV and UhuruTec are working together to build a robust, fully automated cloud platform based on SCS.

Technical details:

The platform was developed from scratch as a cloud-native solution based on open technologies:

  • 3 Availability Zones, 6 environments (Lab, QA Infrastructure, QA Workload, 2× production environments by confidentiality class)
  • Bare-metal provisioning via Kubernetes, Metal3 and standalone Ironic
  • OpenStack via UhuruTec USK (Yaook), the Kubermatic Kubernetes distribution
  • Storage: Ceph; Hardware: Cisco UCS servers (rack/blade), Dell servers
  • GitOps-based operations (full configuration in Git)
  • Monitoring: Prometheus Node Exporter, Zabbix, Mimir, Grafana; Log aggregation: Fluent Bit, Kafka, OpenSearch
  • Currently ~380 nodes; target: 1,000 nodes by the end of 2027/28

This architecture is particularly well suited to organisations with strict compliance requirements, under significant pressure to grow, and which wish to operate and further develop their infrastructure themselves on a long-term basis.

Background

The DATEV is one of the key IT infrastructures within the German tax and legal sectors: as a co-operative providing tax consultancy, auditing and legal services, it processes 14.9 million payslips annually and manages 6.4 billion documents. With 790,000 clients and 9,000 new sign-ups every month, the demands on scalability and availability are constantly increasing. The existing infrastructure scaled only vertically, created vendor lock-in and did not allow for a multi-cloud approach.

Procedure

Together with UhuruTec DATEV opted for a completely new, cloud-native development based on the Sovereign Cloud Stack (SCS). SCS provides the crucial framework for this: open, certifiable standards that demonstrably guarantee interoperability, transparency and digital sovereignty – thereby laying the foundations on which DATEV can operate independently in the long term. Following a structured market analysis and a convincing proof of concept, the decision in favour of this approach was clear.

Result

The platform was designed from the ground up to be cloud-native – not a ‘lift-and-shift’ solution, but a completely new development based on open technologies. Kubernetes, Ceph and a fully GitOps-based operation ensure that the entire infrastructure is reproducible, traceable and can be operated automatically. For more than 2,500 developers at DATEV, this means a significantly improved developer experience: software can be rolled out more quickly and in a more standardised manner – on a platform that they themselves can understand and further develop.

An SCS-compliant foundation is not merely a technical requirement, but a strategic decision: it enables the next step towards a genuine multi-cloud architecture – with standardised APIs, without vendor lock-in, and with the freedom to switch infrastructure providers at any time. DATEV demonstrates that digital sovereignty and modern cloud-native architecture are not mutually exclusive, even in a highly regulated environment.
