Digitally sovereign IT for science - FAU realises an SCS-compliant self-service cloud

The Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) is one of the largest research universities in Germany. In order to significantly simplify access to computing resources for teaching, research and student projects while reducing dependence on proprietary virtualisation solutions, FAU 2024 decided to set up an SCS-compliant self-service cloud called „Compute Cloud“ .

Together with the stackXperts GmbH a completely new OpenStack-based infrastructure was developed in just four months. The aim was to create a flexible, cost-efficient and maintainable alternative to the existing VMware environment that provides CPU and GPU resources without long application paths and is based on clear standards. Sovereign Cloud Stack was chosen because the modular software stack based on OSISM allows in-depth technical customisation and is supported by an active community and established partners.

The new platform now gives the FAU community immediate access to compute and GPU performance - a key advantage, especially for AI and machine learning applications. GPU sharing, needs-based resource utilisation and the relief of the IT teams result in measurable efficiency gains. The introduction has been well received by users and makes daily use easier.

The solution is also designed for the long term: The first extensions, for example in the GPU area, were implemented shortly after commissioning. The platform permanently complements the existing virtualisation landscape and serves as a scalable basis for growing requirements.

The project also serves as a model for the university landscape. SCS conformity strengthens interoperability, reduces dependencies and creates a more open cloud infrastructure. FAU sees this as a possible signpost for other universities - with the potential to establish networked, sovereign cloud structures in the university sector in the future.

With the SCS-based „Compute Cloud“ has the FAU has taken a strategically important step towards a flexible, independent and future-proof IT infrastructure. Today, it forms a central building block for modern research and teaching and provides a sustainable basis for future growth.
